Last reviewed: October 25, 2026. Prices come from two flight schools' published rate sheets and from Robinson Helicopter Company's own page, each dated below. Federal rules come from the eCFR text current as of October 22, 2026. Aircraft purchase prices and insurance premiums were not available from a primary source, so this guide gives no numbers for them and lists what to ask instead.

Many students learn to fly in a Robinson R22 and then step up to the R44. The two aircraft cost different amounts per hour, and both fall under a special FAA training rule. This guide compares what schools publish, explains the safety training requirement and lists the questions to ask before choosing a fleet.

Quick answer

Hillsboro Aero Academy lists the R22 at $350 an hour and the R44 at $570 an hour, before instruction (effective Nov. 1, 2026). Quantum Helicopters lists R22 dual instruction at $395 an hour and R44 dual instruction at $695 an hour (effective Jan. 1, 2026). Federal rule SFAR 73 adds special training for anyone flying an R22 or R44, and Robinson's own Pilot Safety Course is priced at $1,133 for the R22 and $1,803 for the R44 in 2026.

Grouped bar chart: Hillsboro lists the R22 at $350 an hour and the R44 at $570 (aircraft rate); Quantum lists R22 dual at $395 and R44 dual at $695.

What the two aircraft are

Robinson describes the R22 Beta II as a two-seat helicopter with a Lycoming piston engine, popular worldwide for nearly 50 years for flight training and other work (robinsonheli.com, R22 Beta II, retrieved Oct. 25, 2026). The R44 Raven II and Clipper II are described as a four-seat helicopter (robinsonheli.com, R44 Raven II / Clipper II). Robinson also sells a two-seat R44 Cadet that it says is suited to flight schools and operators who want the economy of a small helicopter (robinsonheli.com, R44 Cadet).

For students the practical differences are cost per hour, seats for passengers on later jobs and what a school or employer owns. Most primary training happens in piston helicopters, as our lessons cost guide explains.

Published hourly rates

School R22 R44 Notes
Hillsboro Aero Academy (effective Nov. 1, 2026) $350 an hour $570 an hour Aircraft rate; flight and ground instruction is listed separately at $65 an hour
Quantum Helicopters (effective Jan. 1, 2026) $395 an hour dual instruction $695 an hour dual instruction Solo or rental R22 listed at $350 plus tax; turbine R66 dual listed at $1,595 an hour

Adding Hillsboro's aircraft and instructor lines gives $415 an hour in the R22 and $635 in the R44 (our sums of published lines, not figures quoted by the school). They exclude fuel surcharges, ground time and tax. Hillsboro says fuel surcharges are set at market rates and updated weekly. The R44 is about 63 percent more per aircraft hour than the R22 at Hillsboro ($570 against $350, our calculation) and about 76 percent more per dual hour at Quantum ($695 against $395, our calculation).

Ask this: Does the quote include instruction, fuel and tax? How many hours are flown in each model during my program? Is there a surcharge for the R44?

Where the R44 appears in a training program

Schools use the R22 for most primary training and add other aircraft later. Hillsboro Aero Academy's published program uses the R22 for the private, instrument and commercial courses and lists 25 hours of dual in the R44 within the flight instructor course (effective Nov. 1, 2026). A student who plans to instruct may therefore pay R44 rates for part of the program. Check the sheet of any school you consider; see flight school criteria.

What "robinson r44 cost" can mean

People who search this phrase may mean three different things:

  • Cost per hour to rent or train. Covered above, with published school rates.
  • Cost to buy an R44. Robinson's pages did not list a price in the text we could read, and the dealer figures we found disagreed with each other widely, so we do not give a purchase price. Ask a Robinson dealer for a written quote that names the configuration, since options change the price.
  • Cost to insure it. See below.

Most students never buy an aircraft. Training cost is rental plus instruction, as the training cost guide shows.

SFAR 73: special training for Robinson helicopters

The FAA's Special Federal Aviation Regulation No. 73 applies to anyone who wants to manipulate the controls of, act as pilot in command of, instruct in, or conduct a flight review in an R22 or R44. It adds to the usual Part 61 rules (14 CFR Part 61, SFAR 73, eCFR text current as of Oct. 22, 2026). The requirements include:

  • Ground training. A flight instructor authorized under the regulation endorses your logbook after ground training on energy management, mast bumping, low rotor RPM and rotor stall, low-G conditions and recovery, and rotor RPM decay.
  • Alternative. A person who can show satisfactory completion of the manufacturer's safety course may obtain an endorsement from an FAA aviation safety inspector instead of completing that ground training.
  • R22 pilot in command. Log at least 200 helicopter hours with at least 50 in the R22, or log at least 10 hours of flight training in the R22 with an endorsement, including autorotations and energy management, engine and rotor RPM control without the governor, and low rotor RPM recognition and recovery.
  • R44 pilot in command. Log at least 200 helicopter hours with at least 50 in the R44 (up to 25 R22 hours may count), or log at least 10 hours of flight training in a Robinson helicopter, at least 5 of them in the R44, with an endorsement for the required maneuvers.
  • Flight review. A pilot who relies on the training route must complete a flight review and endorsement 12 calendar months after the endorsement date, unless the experience requirement has been met.

This is a summary. The regulation is long and was revised in 2024, so read the current text or ask your instructor how it applies to your plan. If a school flies Robinsons, plan for this training and ask how it is priced.

Ask this: Is the SFAR 73 ground training included in the price quoted? Who is the authorized instructor? How many R44 hours will I need for the ratings I want?

Robinson's Pilot Safety Course

Robinson Helicopter Company's Pilot Safety Course is offered at its Torrance, California facility for R22, R44 and R66 pilots. It consists of four full days of classroom instruction and approximately 1.3 hours of flight time with a Robinson instructor. It is not a transition course for a specific model. Attendees need a headset and logbook on flight day, and student pilots must obtain their helicopter rating before attending. The 2026 course price is $1,133 for the R22 and $1,803 for the R44 (robinsonheli.com, Pilot Safety Course, retrieved Oct. 25, 2026). The page says the course does not offer the Flight Instructor Refresher Course or SFAR endorsements.

Hillsboro Aero Academy lists a recommended Robinson safety course at $900 (effective Nov. 1, 2026). That differs from Robinson's 2026 listed prices, so the school's figure may reflect a different provider, format or year. Confirm which course a school means and what is included.

Insurance

We found no primary source with student insurance premiums, so this guide gives no number. Students may rent from a school that carries its own coverage, and renters or owners may be offered separate policies. Questions to ask any insurer or school:

  • What coverage does the school carry, and what is my exposure if I damage the aircraft?
  • Do I need my own renter's policy, and does it cover training flights?
  • Does the policy restrict model, hours or instructor?
  • What deductible applies?
  • Are there extra requirements for students with few hours?

Get written quotes and compare coverage terms before comparing price. Any insurance partner on this site will be labeled in the disclosure.

Choosing a fleet: a short checklist

  • Compare the all-in hourly cost of the school's R22 and R44, not just the aircraft rate.
  • Ask how many aircraft are available, so lessons are not cancelled for maintenance.
  • Confirm how SFAR 73 training is handled and priced.
  • Ask which model your instructor and program will use for each rating.
  • See school comparison criteria and the financing guide before borrowing.
  • Try a discovery flight to see the cockpit and the training environment.

Frequently asked questions

What does an R22 cost per hour?

Hillsboro Aero Academy lists $350 an hour for the aircraft plus $65 an hour for instruction, and Quantum Helicopters lists $395 an hour dual (both 2026). Confirm current prices.

How much more is the R44 than the R22?

At Hillsboro the aircraft rate is $570 against $350, and at Quantum dual is $695 against $395. Fuel surcharges and tax can change the totals.

Is the R44 better for training?

No source we reviewed says so. The R22 is a two-seat trainer and the R44 seats four. Schools choose based on their programs and fleets.

What is SFAR 73?

A special FAA rule that requires extra training and endorsements for people who fly Robinson R22 and R44 helicopters.

Do you have to take Robinson's safety course?

SFAR 73 allows completing the manufacturer's safety course as an alternative to the ground training, with an endorsement from an FAA aviation safety inspector. It is not the only way to meet the rule.

How much does helicopter pilot insurance cost?

It varies widely by policy and provider, and we found no primary source with figures. Ask for written quotes.
