Last reviewed: October 25, 2026. Every figure below comes from an agency page, a USAJOBS announcement, an agency job bulletin or a regulation, each linked in the text and in Sources. Where an agency publishes nothing, this page says so.

Quick answer

Law enforcement flying splits into two paths. At some agencies the pilot must first be a sworn officer who later transfers to the air unit (California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles Police Department, Texas DPS, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office). At others, an experienced civilian-style pilot applies directly (U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations, Maryland State Police Aviation Command, Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Air Support Unit). Published hour minimums range from none stated (Texas DPS) to 2,500 helicopter pilot-in-command hours (Santa Barbara County). Check each agency's current bulletin before planning around any figure.

Bar chart of law enforcement pilot hours: Santa Barbara Sheriff 2,500 helicopter PIC; Maryland State Police 2,000 PIC and 1,200 second in command; CBP 1,500 flight hours (up to 500 waivable); Hillsborough Sheriff 1,000 preferred turbine hours; California Highway Patrol manual 150 hours with the commercial certificate.

What the job is

Law enforcement helicopter pilots fly aircraft owned by police, sheriff, state or federal agencies. The agencies describe a mix of missions rather than one job:

  • The Maryland State Police says its pilots provide airborne medical transport, law enforcement support and search and rescue around the clock.
  • The California Highway Patrol says its helicopters perform search and rescue, emergency medical response and law enforcement missions in urban and remote areas.
  • Santa Barbara County runs a combined Sheriff and Fire Department unit, so its pilot classification covers patrol support, search and rescue and firefighting work.
  • CBP lists the Air Interdiction Agent as a federal law enforcement position that can be filled by airplane pilots, helicopter pilots or dual-rated pilots.

Because the mix differs, a "police pilot" at one agency may do mostly patrol support and at another mostly medical flights. Read the unit's own page.

A typical day as employers describe it

These descriptions are the employers' own wording of duties, restated here. None is a personal account.

  • Maryland State Police Aviation Command says it staffs lifesaving missions 24 hours a day as part of a public safety aviation team, and that pilots can be assigned to one of seven bases statewide (MSP helicopter pilot page).
  • CBP Air and Marine Operations lists duties that include flying as pilot in command or sole manipulator in all environments, including night and poor weather, using radar and night vision goggles, and coordinating airborne law enforcement operations (USAJOBS announcement AIA 27-01).
  • Santa Barbara County Air Support Unit lists duties such as patrol support, search and rescue, surveillance, hauling cargo, aerial firefighting and daily preflight inspections (unit page).
  • Texas DPS Aircraft Operations Division describes air patrol work to locate suspects and fugitives, and to assist search and rescue (division page).

Aircraft commonly used

Only what the agencies state:

  • Texas DPS: 14 Airbus AS350 helicopters (3 with hoists) and one Airbus EC145, plus fixed-wing aircraft (division page).
  • Santa Barbara County: the unit page describes Bell OH-58A+, Bell UH-1H and HH-1N, and Sikorsky S-70 / HH-60L helicopters, many obtained as retired military aircraft (unit page).
  • Los Angeles Police Department: a FlightSafety article describes a fleet of 16 helicopters and more than 50 pilots (FlightSafety). The article is undated as read, and the aircraft models were not confirmed from an LAPD page.
  • California Highway Patrol: its Office of Air Operations page states 12 helicopters and 13 airplanes but does not name helicopter models (CHP).
  • Maryland State Police and CBP: the pages read did not name helicopter models.

FAA Class II medical; Florida law enforcement certification or equivalency HCSO job S2790 (updated 9/25/2026) Oct. 25, 2026

The LAPD notice is old and may have been replaced, so treat it as a sign of the path (sworn service first) and not as current criteria. The CHP manual does not say whether the 150-hour line is a pilot-in-command figure.

Schedule patterns employers publish

  • Maryland State Police lists 12-hour shifts and flexible schedules.
  • CBP states regular, recurring rotating shift work, a mobility agreement, and overnight travel on a regular basis.
  • Texas DPS states frequent overnight and occasional week-long travel and being subject to call 24 hours a day.
  • CHP states that people assigned to the air program must agree to remain a minimum of one year after finishing training, unless waived.

The other agencies reviewed publish no schedule on the pages read.

Where the bases or operating areas are

  • CBP: the announcement says the duty location is offered after the assessment and may be in the Southwest Border Region, Southeast Border Region, the Caribbean Air and Marine Branch or the National Air Security Operations unmanned aircraft sites. It names examples such as Tucson and Yuma, AZ; San Diego, CA; El Paso, Laredo and McAllen, TX; Homestead, FL; and Aguadilla, PR.
  • Texas DPS: air stations in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Amarillo, Lubbock, Del Rio, Laredo, Edinburg, Houston, Alpine, El Paso and Midland (page dated August 12, 2020).
  • Maryland State Police: seven bases statewide; the page read does not name them.
  • California Highway Patrol: eight air units across California; the page read does not list the locations.
  • Santa Barbara County: Santa Ynez Airport, serving about 2,744 square miles.
  • LAPD: its Air Support Division page describes the nation's largest rooftop heliport.

How to get in

  1. Decide which path fits. If the agency requires sworn status (CHP, LAPD, Texas DPS, Hillsborough County), the first step is joining that agency as an officer, then applying to the air unit. If it hires pilots directly (CBP, Maryland State Police, Santa Barbara County), the first step is building flight hours.
  2. Earn the certificates. A commercial helicopter certificate and an instrument rating appear in nearly every listing. See the training guide and the roadmap.
  3. Build hours. Direct-hire units publish 1,000 to 2,500 hours. Many pilots build time as instructors; see flight instruction careers and the timeline guide.
  4. Plan for the extras. Some listings ask for turbine time, mountain time or night vision goggle time, so ask early which category counts.
  5. Check the hiring windows. The CBP announcement is open for a limited period, the Maryland bulletin closed on October 18, 2026, and Texas DPS recruits from within. Openings come and go.
  6. Consider the military route. CBP says military flight hours are not converted, so confirm in the bulletin how military time counts. See the military-to-civilian guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do law enforcement helicopter pilots have to be police officers?

It depends on the agency. CHP, LAPD, Texas DPS and Hillsborough County describe officer-first paths. CBP hires Air Interdiction Agents, a federal law enforcement position. Maryland State Police and Santa Barbara County publish pilot minimums without a sworn-officer requirement on the pages read.

How many hours do police helicopter pilots need?

Published figures differ. Maryland State Police lists 2,000 hours for pilot in command, Santa Barbara County lists 2,500 PIC hours, and CBP lists 1,500 hours with up to 500 waivable. Texas DPS publishes no hour minimum.

Can you apply with fewer hours?

CBP states that applicants may apply at 750 total hours but must reach at least 1,000 at their own expense before the assessment. Other agencies publish no such rule on the pages read.

Is the pay posted?

For CBP and Maryland State Police, yes (see the table). For several agencies, no figure was found, and this page does not estimate one.
