Last reviewed: October 25, 2026. This page restates what firefighting helicopter operators and government agencies say on their own pages. Contract firefighting requirements vary by contract, and some operators publish none. Check each link before acting.
Quick answerFirefighting pilots fly water or retardant drops, move crews and cargo, and support wildfire missions, either for a government agency or for a private operator working under contract. Published minimums are high: CAL FIRE lists 2,000 PIC helicopter hours, Coulson Aviation says it prefers 2,500 flight hours, Firehawk Helicopters listed 2,500 total time as PIC for an H125 pilot role, and Los Angeles County Fire lists 4,000 PIC hours. Federal wildland fire missions also require the pilot to hold an interagency pilot card.
What the job is
Two employer types appear on this track.
- Private operators fly under contract. Coulson Aviation describes its pilots as handling aerial firefighting (distributing water or retardant to suppress or contain wildfires), transporting emergency personnel and heavy lift operations. Firehawk Helicopters describes its fleet as operating in support of wildland firefighting and other commercial work. Sources: Coulson and Firehawk history.
- Government agencies employ pilots directly. CAL FIRE (state forestry fire pilot), Los Angeles County Fire Department (pilot, fire services) and Los Angeles Fire Department (internal pipeline for sworn members) are the agency pages read for this review.
Federal wildland missions have their own rules. The National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) says every aircraft and pilot used for a federal wildland fire mission must have a current aircraft and pilot card or a letter of authorization, and that the aircraft must be listed on a valid contract that covers the type of work. For related experience that overlaps, see utility and powerline careers.
A typical day as employers describe it
No page read describes an hour-by-hour day. What is published:
- Coulson Aviation says much of the flying is done by hand rather than with automation, that multi-crew, tailwheel, cargo, agricultural and low-level experience is valuable, and that attitude and team orientation are important factors in hiring. It says pilots work with dispatchers, ground crew and other aircraft, and that aerial firefighting pilots are safety conscious and follow procedures. Source: Coulson, How to Become an Aerial Firefighter.
- NWCG lists mission types for which a card is needed, including water delivery (buckets), helitorch, cargo, longline, reconnaissance and fire surveillance. Source: NWCG aircraft and pilot carding.
- Los Angeles Fire Department says its pilots are sworn members who first work as firefighters, then apply for the air operations pipeline. Source: LAFD Air Operations.
Aircraft commonly used
- Coulson Aviation lists the CH-47 Chinook (a helitanker carrying 3,000 gallons, with a 90-second refill and night operation), UH-60 Black Hawk, Sikorsky S-61 (1,057-gallon belly tank), Sikorsky S-76 (command and control) and Bell 412. Source: Coulson fleet.
- Firehawk Helicopters says it operates a mixed fleet of 9 Sikorsky S-70 and UH-60 Black Hawks and 5 Airbus H125. The page carries a 2018 copyright, so confirm the current fleet. Source: Firehawk history.
- Helicopter Express describes a fleet including H125, Bell 407HP, 205, 412EPX, K-max and S-64E/F, and lists firefighting among its work. Source: Helicopter Express careers.
- Helimax Aviation and HeliQwest: no aircraft list was read.

Notes:
- The Firehawk employment page is undated and carries a 2018 copyright. Treat it as a guide to what the operator has asked for, and confirm the current posting.
- The CAL FIRE page loaded through a reader tool but its Available Positions tab did not show contents. California hires through a state examination process posted separately.
- Los Angeles County recruitments open and close, and the page did not show whether one was open.
- The Columbia Helicopters site did not load during this review, so no Columbia requirements are stated. Erickson's page says its S-64 fleet and aerial operations unit were acquired by Helicopter Express.
- This site did not read a Forest Service page that sets out contract pilot hour minimums, so none are stated. The NWCG carding page shows that a card and a valid contract are required but does not list hour minimums.
Schedule patterns employers publish
- Firehawk: its H125 pilot and mechanic listings carry a "12/12 Schedule" label. The page does not define it, and this site does not interpret it.
- Federal duty limits: NWCG states pilots on federal wildland missions work within a 14-hour duty day, 8 hours of flight time per day, 2 days off in 14 calendar days, and 36 hours of cumulative flight time in any 6 consecutive days.
- Seasonal work: Coulson, Helimax and the agencies read do not state seasonal patterns on the pages used.
- LAFD: the pipeline from firefighter to pilot takes approximately four years, per the department page.
On exclusive-use contracts, one operator page mentions the term: Firehawk's history says it began operating its first Exclusive Use contract in 1990 in Tehachapi, California, for the Bureau of Land Management. No page read defines exclusive use or call-when-needed contracts, so this site does not compare them.
Where the bases or operating areas are
- Firehawk: the H125 listing says to reside anywhere in the lower 48 states within 90 minutes of an airport with seven-day-a-week airline service. Its S-70 mechanic listing names Leesburg, Florida or Boise, Idaho.
- Helimax: headquartered in McClellan, California (Sacramento).
- CAL FIRE and LA County Fire: California agencies.
- Coulson Aviation: its fleet page refers to operations worldwide.
Pay data we can source
No firefighting pay figures are in this site's pay scales dataset, and none were read on the operator or agency pages used here. This site does not quote a number. For broader context see the helicopter pilot salary guide.
How to get in
- Earn the certificates. Every minimum above starts with a commercial helicopter certificate or ATP. See the roadmap and requirements.
- Build PIC and turbine time. The lowest published PIC figure here is Firehawk's 2,500 for an H125 role, and CAL FIRE lists 2,000. See how long it takes and helicopter pilot jobs by track.
- Add the specialty hours. Operators and agencies name mountain, vertical reference or longline, sling load and low-level mission time. Ask how these hours are counted.
- Plan for the card. Coulson says that after being hired, pilots typically obtain an interagency qualification card and an instrument rating. Santa Barbara County states a card must be obtained within a year of appointment. Federal missions require a card per NWCG.
- Consider the agency route. CAL FIRE and LA County hire through civil service processes; LAFD hires pilots from its own sworn members.
- Military route. See military to civilian helicopter pilot.

Frequently asked questions
How many hours do you need to be a firefighting helicopter pilot?
It depends on the employer. CAL FIRE lists 2,000 PIC helicopter hours with specialty hours, Coulson says it prefers 2,500 flight hours, Firehawk's listing asked for 2,500 total time as PIC, and Los Angeles County Fire lists 4,000 PIC hours.
What is a pilot card?
NWCG says pilots flying a federal wildland fire mission must hold a current Interagency Helicopter Pilot Qualification Card that authorizes the mission type and aircraft. Coulson says pilots typically obtain one after being hired.
Are firefighting pilot jobs seasonal?
The pages read do not state this. Ask each employer about contract length and off-season work.
What are the duty limits on federal wildland missions?
NWCG lists a 14-hour duty day, 8 hours of flight time per day, 2 days off in 14 calendar days, and 36 hours of cumulative flight time in any 6 consecutive days.
Do firefighting pilots need to be firefighters?
At the Los Angeles Fire Department, pilots are sworn members who first serve as firefighters. Private operators and other agencies read here do not state that requirement.
