Last reviewed: October 25, 2026. Regulations are from the eCFR (text current as of October 22, 2026). Hiring details are from schools' and agencies' own pages. Schools often publish no instructor minimums, and this page says so where that is the case.

Quick answer

To become a helicopter flight instructor (CFI), the FAA requires a minimum age of 18 and a commercial or airline transport pilot certificate with a helicopter rating (14 CFR 61.183), plus instructor knowledge tests, logged training and a practical test. To teach in a Robinson R22 or R44, the FAA adds experience and training requirements in SFAR 73, including 200 helicopter hours with 50 in Robinson helicopters. BLS and AOPA both describe instructing as a way to build flight time. Few schools publish instructor pay or hour minimums, so ask directly.

Bar chart: SFAR 73 requires 200 helicopter hours with 50 in Robinson helicopters to instruct in an R22 or R44; DuBois says recent full-time instructors flew approximately 800 to 1,200 hours in a year; Quantum says instructors average 1,000 PIC hours in about a year.

What the job is

A flight instructor trains pilots on the ground and in the aircraft and signs the endorsements that let students solo or take tests. The FAA describes the privileges in 14 CFR 61.193: conducting ground and flight training, and issuing endorsements for pilot certificates, ratings, flight reviews, practical tests and knowledge tests.

Rules that shape the day:

  • Training limit: an instructor may not conduct more than 8 hours of flight training in any 24-consecutive-hour period (14 CFR 61.195(a)).
  • Records: an instructor must sign the logbook of each person trained and keep endorsement records for at least 3 years (14 CFR 61.189).
  • Recent experience: privileges apply only if recent experience is met within the preceding 24 calendar months (14 CFR 61.197). AOPA reports that CFI certificates issued on or after December 1, 2024 carry no printed expiration date, while the 24-month recent experience requirement still applies.

A typical day as employers describe it

  • DuBois Aviation (Chino Airport, CA) lists duties of structured helicopter flight and ground instruction, preparing students for stage checks, knowledge tests, practical tests and safe solo flight, keeping training records and endorsements, and coordinating with dispatch, maintenance and other instructors (DuBois helicopter instructor page).
  • Kansas Highway Patrol lists a part-time position providing helicopter ground and flight training and assessments for its own pilots, in addition to acting as pilot in command or tactical flight officer (KHP posting 220162).
  • Hillsboro Aero Academy describes the CFI course as the route to instruct other pilots, and says the instructor rating helps pilots gain the flight hours helicopter employers demand (HAA CFI course).

Aircraft commonly used

  • DuBois Aviation: it seeks instructors qualified to instruct in the Robinson R22.
  • Quantum Helicopters (Kissimmee, FL) says new pilots almost always begin as instructors flying piston-powered helicopters, and cites FAA regulations, insurance and job availability as reasons (Quantum career path).
  • Hillsboro Aero Academy: its published price sheet, summarized in the training guide, lists CFI training in an R44 and CFII training in an R22 with instrument equipment (effective Nov. 1, 2026).
  • Kansas Highway Patrol: no helicopter model is named in the text read.

Published minimums and ratings

The federal baseline comes first, then employers.

Schedule patterns employers publish

  • DuBois: says compensation, availability and scheduling are discussed with qualified applicants. It also states that recent full-time instructors commonly gained approximately 800 to 1,200 hours in a year, and that actual time varies with student demand, availability, weather and scheduling.
  • Quantum: says its instructors on average reach 1,000 hours of PIC time in about one year, though many continue longer (school's own statement).
  • AOPA: says instructor working conditions vary widely, from salary and benefits to per-hour pay with minimal income.
  • Kansas Highway Patrol: the position is part-time.

Where the bases or operating areas are

  • DuBois Aviation: Chino Airport, California.
  • Hillsboro Aero Academy: Hillsboro, Oregon.
  • Quantum Helicopters: Kissimmee, Florida.
  • Kansas Highway Patrol: Topeka/Shawnee County, Kansas.

For other schools, use the school directory and the school-selection criteria.

Pay data we can source

  • Kansas Highway Patrol: the part-time Helicopter Flight Instructor posting states $60 per hour (page timestamp March 19, 2026; it was shown as posted 7 months earlier, so it may be filled). See the pay scales row.
  • BLS context: for commercial pilots in private technical and trade schools, BLS reported a median of $93,820 (May 2025), as cited in the jobs guide. That is an industry grouping and not a helicopter instructor figure.
  • Schools: DuBois, Hillsboro and Quantum publish no instructor pay amounts on the pages read.

How to get in

  1. Complete the earlier certificates. Private, instrument and commercial helicopter certificates come first. See helicopter pilot training and cost.
  2. Pass the instructor knowledge tests. The FAA requires a logbook endorsement on the fundamentals of instructing and knowledge tests for instructor certificates (14 CFR 61.183(d)-(f)).
  3. Train to the standard. The FAA publishes the Flight Instructor Airman Certification Standards for rotorcraft-helicopter (FAA-S-ACS-29). Training covers the areas of operation in 14 CFR 61.187.
  4. Take the practical test and get the CFI certificate. Many students add the instrument instructor rating (CFII) as well. The Hillsboro price sheet and Quantum's page both show CFI and CFII as parts of the professional programs.
  5. Meet the Robinson requirements if the school flies them. SFAR 73 sets the experience and training for R22 and R44 instructors.
  6. Build hours. Quantum states that about 1,000 hours of helicopter PIC time is typically needed to move to the next level of employment, and AOPA says instructing can reach the minimums quickly, though its page is aimed at airplane careers. See how long it takes and the other tracks, such as law enforcement and tour and charter.
  7. Keep privileges current. Meet the recent experience requirement within 24 calendar months (14 CFR 61.197).

Ask any school before accepting an offer: Is pay hourly, salaried or per-lesson? What happens when weather cancels lessons? How many students will be assigned, and how many hours do instructors typically log?

Frequently asked questions

What are the FAA requirements for a helicopter CFI?

Be at least 18, read, speak, write and understand English, hold a commercial or ATP certificate with a helicopter rating, receive the instructing endorsement, pass the required knowledge tests and pass the practical test (14 CFR 61.183).

Do you need an instrument rating to be a helicopter CFI?

Under 14 CFR 61.183(c), an instrument rating is listed for airplane, powered-lift and instrument instructor certificates. It is not listed for a helicopter flight instructor certificate. Employers may still prefer it, as DuBois does.

Can you teach in a Robinson R22 right after getting your CFI?

Not automatically. SFAR 73 requires instructors to meet experience and training conditions, including 200 helicopter hours with 50 in Robinson helicopters, before providing training in an R22 or R44.

Do schools hire their own graduates?

Quantum says it can hire many of its CFI students shortly after graduation. No source ranks schools on this, and the Quantum openings page showed no openings on the check date.
