Last reviewed: October 25, 2026. This page restates what utility helicopter operators and one public agency say on their own pages. Several operators publish no pilot minimums, and this page says so instead of filling the gap. Check each link before acting.

Quick answer

Utility flying covers powerline inspection and patrol, powerline construction, external load (longline) work and moving crews to hard-to-reach sites. Most operators read for this page publish no pilot hour minimums on their public pages. The clearest published requirements are from Helicopter Transport Services, which asks for prior pilot-in-command experience and strong vertical reference and longline skills, and from a City of Los Angeles helicopter pilot bulletin that listed 3,000 PIC hours (that recruitment closed on October 15, 2026).

Bar chart of the City of Los Angeles helicopter pilot bulletin: 3,000 PIC hours, 1,500 PIC in a turbine helicopter, 300 PIC above 5,000 feet MSL, 50 PIC of vertical reference, and at least 50 turbine PIC hours in the last 12 months.

What the job is

Operators describe several kinds of work under this heading.

  • Powerline construction. Air2 says helicopter-access construction moves personnel, tools and hardware to elevated work locations, and lists tasks such as placing structures and poles, hanging insulators and stringing blocks, pulling sock line and installing spacers and marker balls. Winco lists conductor, insulator and spacer installation, splicing and similar tasks. Sources: Air2 construction support and Winco services.
  • Powerline inspection and patrol. Winco lists comprehensive visual line inspection and patrol. Air2 describes inspection services including a camera-equipped inspection helicopter. Sources: as above and Air2 inspection services.
  • Heavy lift and external load. Helicopter Transport Services (HTS) describes heavy-lift work in construction, firefighting and precision lift missions. Siller Helicopters lists construction, power grid, HVAC and rooftop, hydroseeding, ski lift and logging services. Sources: HTS careers and Siller Helicopters.
  • Moving people to work sites. Winco lists personnel transport and line crew movement under its emergency response services. This site did not find an operator page that sets out requirements for human external cargo (HEC) flying, so no requirement is stated for it here.

The City of Los Angeles bulletin describes duties including utility, security and transportation flights, external loads and power line patrol.

A typical day as employers describe it

No operator page read describes a day in detail, and this site does not invent one. What is published:

  • Winco says it provides helicopters and crews (pilots, mechanics, linemen and groundmen) for powerline construction and maintenance projects across the United States, and gives an example of mobilizing a helicopter and crew within five hours of Hurricane Wilma's track over Florida for damage assessment. Source: Winco home and Winco services.
  • Air2 says its helicopter-based construction operations are integrated and managed by professionals with over 100 years of combined experience, and that its linemen inspect structures, hardware and right-of-way as part of its post-construction inspection service. Source: Air2 construction support.
  • HTS says its crews rotate on tours with their assigned helicopter to support construction and wildfire response (this is stated in its mechanic apprenticeship text) and that pilots in its PIC trainee program receive flight instruction, mission-based training and an FAA type rating on completion. Source: HTS careers.

Aircraft commonly used

  • Winco: a fleet of ten helicopters, with MD500 series helicopters used for wire stringing, line maintenance and repair. Source: Winco services.
  • HTS: S-61N and CH-54 (SK-64) heavy-lift helicopters in its PIC trainee program. Source: HTS careers.
  • Siller Helicopters: its menu lists the S-64E Skycrane, CH-54A Skycrane, S-61A and S-61V. Its site banner says the S-64 fleet and aerial operations business unit were acquired by Helicopter Express. Source: Siller Helicopters.
  • Helicopter Express: its careers page describes a fleet including H125, Bell 407HP, 205, 412EPX, K-max and S-64E/F. Source: Helicopter Express careers.
  • Air2: the inspection page describes a customized helicopter with an infrared and corona camera system; no models are named on the pages read.

Notes:

  • The City of Los Angeles recruitment opened October 2, 2026 and closed October 15, 2026, so it was closed when checked. The bulletin was revised October 5, 2026 and references LADWP reciprocity. It is shown because it states utility and external load requirements in one place. Agencies reopen recruitments, so check for the next announcement.
  • Columbia Helicopters' site did not load and Haverfield Aviation's own site could not be found, so no requirements are stated for either. Search results that quote job-board postings for these and other operators are not used.

Schedule patterns employers publish

None of the pilot pages read state a rotation or schedule. HTS says full-time or contract positions are available in various locations in North America, that temporary positions for the upcoming season may become permanent for the right candidates, and that it keeps resumes on file for one year when there are no vacancies. Seasonal and project-based work is common to this track, but this site cites only what the operators say. Ask each employer about travel, rotations and project length.

Where the bases or operating areas are

  • Winco: address in Aurora, Oregon; says it supports projects throughout the United States.
  • HTS: U.S. address in Aurora, Oregon; says positions are in various locations throughout North America.
  • Air2: address in Pembroke, New Hampshire; describes itself as a specialty helicopter operator serving electric utilities and contractors in North America.
  • Siller Helicopters: headquartered in Yuba City, California; says it keeps aircraft in northern and southern California and one in the east for projects east of the Mississippi River.
  • City of Los Angeles: Los Angeles, California (agency recruitment).

Pay data we can source

No utility or powerline pilot pay figures are in this site's pay scales dataset, and none were found on the operator pages read. HTS says pay is determined by experience and offers "very competitive" packages, with no number. This site does not quote a figure. For general context see the helicopter pilot salary guide.

How to get in

  1. Earn the certificates. See the roadmap and the requirements overview.
  2. Build PIC time in smaller aircraft first. The HTS program is for pilots who already have PIC command experience, and the City of LA bulletin lists 3,000 PIC hours. See how long it takes and helicopter pilot jobs by track, which notes that utility and aerial work can build PIC and turbine time.
  3. Look for vertical reference and longline experience. HTS names these skills directly. Ask an operator how a new pilot can log them.
  4. Mountain and low-level time. The City of LA bulletin counts mountain PIC hours and low-level work such as survey and firefighting. See firefighting careers for related experience.
  5. Contact operators directly. Several operators accept resumes by email or through applicant sites. HTS asks flight crew to email a resume and hours summary.
  6. Military route. See military to civilian helicopter pilot.

Frequently asked questions

What hours do powerline helicopter pilots need?

Most operators read for this page publish no hour figures. HTS asks for prior PIC command experience and vertical reference and longline skills. A City of Los Angeles bulletin listed 3,000 PIC hours with specific turbine, vertical reference and mountain hours.

What is vertical reference flying?

The City of LA bulletin counts PIC hours "displaying vertical reference proficiency", and HTS lists vertical reference skills as a requirement. This site did not read an operator definition, so it does not define the term further. Ask an operator to explain how it counts these hours.

Is utility flying seasonal?

HTS says temporary positions for the upcoming season may become permanent for the right candidates. Other operators do not say.

Can new commercial pilots start in utility flying?

The postings and pages read here show experience-based requirements. Entry-level tracks are covered in helicopter pilot jobs.
